Lamorna Elmer Ceramics

FAQs

Are the items dishwasher and microwave safe?

Yes, fully vitrified clay that has been fired to a high temperature is impermeable to water. However, handwashing is much gentler, so recommended for anything precious.

Do you deliver outside of the UK?

Unfortunately not at the moment.

Do you accept personalisation requests and commissions?

Yes! I love making special items for people. Do get in touch with your ideas to discuss. I have made personalised presents for weddings, birthdays and book launches.

Something I like is sold out - will you be making more?

Possibly. I make a lot of one-off pieces, so it might be that there aren't any more in production but I am always open to requests. Made-to-order items take around 6 to 8 weeks to be delivered.

How is your pottery made?

I use a range of stoneware clays bought from reputable ceramics suppliers. All scraps are recycled and used again. I mostly 'throw' pots on the potters wheel, but sometimes I handbuild using slabs of clay draped over MDF moulds. The pieces are then left to partially dry to 'leather hard' and then trimmed (tidied up). They then dry completely before being bisque fired to 900°C. I then dip the pieces in glaze and fire in the kiln for the second time to between 1220 and 1250°C. I use a combination of off-the-shelf glazes and ones I've made myself by combining base ingredients and adding colourants. It's often said that pottery is relaxing, but in reality there's a lot of chemistry, trouble-shooting and breakages so I'd argue that it's enjoyable but perhaps don't skip your morning meditation :)
